As of version 7, Virtuoso offers a column-wise compressed storage format alongside its traditional row-wise storage format. In the column-wise storage model, each column of a table or index is stored contiguously, so that values of a single column on consecutive rows are physically adjacent. In this way, adjacent values are of the same type, and if the index is sorted on said value, the consecutive values often form an ascending sequence.

Single-Tier drivers conform to the common perception of how ODBC or JDBC drivers are configured. They are installed on the client, customized to a particular database, and use the database vendor's communication services to connect to the database.
Multi-Tier drivers feature a Generic Driver installed on the client, a Request Broker and Database Agent installed on the server, and their own database independent networking layer. The Multi-Tier drivers are more sophisticated than the Single-Tier drivers as they have been developed with enterprise-wide deployment in mind and feature enhancements in areas such as performance, security and configuration management.

The Data Access Driver and Universal Server product downloads are accompanied by a fully-functional license which will expire 15 days after download. After a successful test of a given product, users can purchase the appropriate license and receive a non-expiring license via email.
