OpenLink Software Delivers Virtuoso 3.2 with Updated .NET CLR integration, XML features, and Web Services Functionality

New Universal Server release reaffirms OpenLink's technology leadership in standards compliant Enterprise Information & Application Integration.

Burlington, MA. October 28, 2003 - OpenLink Software, Inc., a leading provider of universal data access and enterprise information integration middleware, announces Virtuoso Universal Server 3.2 — the latest edition of its cross platform Virtual Database for SQL, XML, and Web Services — and continues to be the only Enterprise-grade V-RDBMS solution to ship with full .NET CLR integration.

The new release builds on prior .NET CLR integration functionality across both the Microsoft and Mono variants of .NET CLR and associated Frameworks, on all Mono-supported platforms, including Microsoft Windows. Virtuoso 3.2 also includes new XML data types, SQLX-compliant SQL-to-XML functionality, XML for Analysis, Weblog Engine Services, and additional Web Services protocol stack implementations, such as WS-Security and WS-Routing. This rich collection of supported standards provides a unique single-server solution that cost-effectively unveils the value propositions of Enterprise Information Integration, XML Content Management, Web Services, and the emerging Semantic Web.

Building on its history, Virtuoso continues to provide access to heterogeneous data sources — Databases, XML and other documents, and Web Services — through industry standard data access interfaces such as XML, XQuery, XPath, SQL, ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB, and ADO.NET. It also integrates transparently with runtime environments for distributed computing such as Microsoft .NET, Mono, and J2EE, enabling the creation and hosting of WSDL-compliant XML Web Services, Stored Procedures, Functions, Triggers, and User Defined Types, written in Java or any .NET bound language. Furthermore, the new release extends its Virtual Web Application Server functionality to include support for Python and Perl, in addition to ongoing support for .NET, ASP, PHP, and Java Server Pages.

"Virtuoso 3.2 is a timely update of many of the sophisticated features first unveiled as part of Virtuoso 3.0, such as cross platform .NET CLR Integration, advanced XML Services, and an unrivalled Web Services platform," said Kingsley Idehen, President & CEO of OpenLink Software. "We are at a critical inflection point, from which a new Web Infrastructure dichotomy will arise: XML Content Syndication and Aggregation, alongside the Executable Web of Web Services. Our new product release reaffirms OpenLink's leadership on both fronts," he added.

“A lot of work has gone into the very latest release of Mono, with the most visible being completion of the Web Services frameworks, and scalability enhancements to the ASP.NET frameworks,” said Miguel de Icaza, Mono Project Leader at Novell. “We remain highly committed to delivering a Mono implementation that enables broad consumption of Microsoft's .NET technology on platforms beyond Windows,” he added.
